A blue Morpho butterfly is one of over 29 species and 147 accepted subspecies of butterflies. As the name implies, the blue morpho butterfly wings are edged with black and bright blue. It is one of best species among the largest butterflies in the world with beautiful wings spanning from 6 to 8 inches. The iridescent and vivid blue coloring is the result of the very small scales on the backs of their wings which reflect light. The underside of the blue morpho’s wings has dull brown color with lots of eyespots, which provides the butterfly camouflage against other insects and birds when its wings are closed.
