What is Lyme Disease?

Lyme disease is a multistage bacterial infectious disease that attacks multiple systems in the human body. Lyme disease is caused by a bacterium known as Borrelia burgdorferi or “spirochete” which being spread by tick bites. Spirochetes are pleomorphic means that they can appear as two or more completely different organisms. This makes both diagnosis and treatment of lyme disease tricky because they are capable of shape-shifting and can fool both the body’s immune system and the antibiotics deployed to destroy them.
